Q&A with Sarah Parrish on “When Darkness Tries to Hide”

An Interview with Sarah Parrish—Dover, Massachusetts

  1. Who could benefit from reading this book?

Anyone who is going through a hardship either dealing with a loss or a problem with drugs, addiction or relationship problems would benefit from this book. Especially with everything that happens with Andy, anyone who is in a similar situation as Jason could benefit from reading this book.

  1. What positive messages does this book convey to readers?

A positive message that this book conveys to readers is too lean on religion for help. Jason is able to find his religion again in order to help him with this situation. It is also shows the importance of people coming together and avoiding drama in times of hardship.

  1. Why should teens read this book?

Teens should read this book because it has an important message about what how bad things can easily happen and how important is to cherish friendships and look our for your friends. It is shares how it is to be truthful and loyal to your friends because if Jason did not tell everyone what happened then he would have been in a slippery situation.

  1. How has your opinion of Jason changed since reading the first MLH book?

My opinion of Jason has definitely changed in this book because I think he is a better person now, than I did before. We can see how this situation really affects him and how he has matured to handle it. I also like how he went back to religion to help him get through this.

  1. A main theme of this story is the battle between the dark and the light. When one is in darkness, he or she cannot see anything clearly. How does the last chapter relate to the events of the story and the theme of light vs. darkness?

In the last chapter, Jason reflects on many elements of his life such as his relationship with Cathy and his friendship with Jason. He reflects on the words of Pastor Mark and finds the light within them. Stacy writes that “Jason had not been able to put the two and two together. The light Pastor Mark had spoken was the same light Jason had observed shining from Pastor Mark’s daughter.” Therefore, the same light and happiness that Jason feels from Cathy, he can find within religion.
