The book When Darkness Tries to Hide, by Stacy Padula is a page turner that allows for readers to learn from the characters in the story. It shows how there are many layers to people, and not everyone is how they seem. Specifically, Jason is a main character who struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, which portray him in a negative light. Throughout the story Jason and Chris, two former best friends, go through darkness and eventually come back to one another. With the help of God and an accident that highlights the harsh reality of how short life could be, Jason and Chris grow and learn from their mistakes.
This story is a quick and easy read that is perfect for Middle School and High School students. It teaches valuable life lessons that could guide students throughout their education. The book also allows for readers to get in touch with their faith and realize that mistakes can be forgiven. I rate this book a 5/5 and would recommend reading it. I loved this book both because it was captivating and sent a positive message.

When Darkness Tries to Hide is a teen novel by Stacy A. Padula. It is book #2 in the Montgomery Lake High book series. Jenna Finnerty was asked a series of questions about the characters, theme, and plot of the story. Reading this would be useful for anyone who has read the book to gain deeper insight from a Montgomery Lake High intern.

Q: How did your opinion of Jason change as you read the story?

A: As I read the story, I began to like Jason and feel bad for him. I wanted him to recover and get out of the bad situation. I hope to see that he sticks with his sobriety and tries harder to become a better person. Whenever I saw Cathy being rude to him or about him it made me mad because I wanted him to recover and not have her as a bad influence.

Q: What can be learned by the way Chris treats Jason in this book?

A: You can learn that since Chris knew Jason was in a bad place, he did not care what rumors Jason was spreading about him. Chris was in the same place and understands that Jason is not thinking clearly. Chris wants to bring God into Jason’s life in order to change the same way Chris did.

Q: A main theme of this story is the battle between the dark and the light. When one is in darkness, he or she cannot see anything clearly. How does the last chapter relate to the events of the story and the theme of light vs. darkness?

A: In the last chapter, Jason reflects on all of his mistakes from the past, as well as all of the new people in his life who have already tried to help him change. Jason is thinking about what he can do to get himself out of the darkness and bring himself into the light. Jason hopes he will be able to stay strong and fight off this darkness, in order to become a better person.

Q: What positive message does this book convey to readers?

A: This book tells readers that they can come out of bad situations no matter what it is. Chris is clearly doing well despite all of his previous partying antics, Chantal and all of Andy’s friends are able to deal with Andy’s injuries, and Jason is beginning to show some improvement. All of the characters are able to cope with the help of God. Chris improved when he let God into his life and is trying to influence Jason to do the same. Chantal and her friends also depend on God to help them get through Andy’s situation.

When Darkness Tries to Hide is a young adult novel by Stacy Padula. It is book #2 in the Montgomery Lake High book series. After reading the book, teen intern Sophia Tufankjian was asked a series of questions. If you have read the series and would like to gain deeper insight into the story read her responses below:

Q: How did your opinion of Jason change as you read the story?

A: Jason starts off the book painted as a troubled young man. His classmates know him as a punk that spreads rumors and starts trouble. Although he was liked by most because of his outgoing and witty personality, Jason’s love for partying made him out of control. He was deep into drinking and drugs and on his way to destroying his future. Throughout the book Jason used his faith to pull him out of this cycle of destruction. In times of need, like after a classmate Andy has a serious accident, Jason steps up and shows his true colors. He is truly a good person and just needed the help of God to be shown in the right light.

Q: What can be learned by the way Chris treats Jason in this book?

A: In this book, Chris took Jason for granted. He was selfish and acted like Jason would always be there for him no matter how he treated him. Although they have had a rocky relationship due to Jason being into partying and Chris focusing on redeeming himself, these boys found their way back to each other. This teaches the lesson that not all friendships are perfect but what’s meant to be will always work out and everything happens for a reason.

Q: A main theme of this story is the battle between the dark and the light. When one is in darkness, he or she cannot see anything clearly. How does the last chapter relate to the events of the story and the theme of light vs. darkness?

A: Jason is a perfect example of a character that faced light and darkness. Throughout the book he faced darkness in the form of partying. Drinking and doing drugs caused him to not see clearly and lose sight of what really matters. He made poor choices that were reflected in the relationships he formed and the ones he lost. Although Jason faced a lot of darkness, he eventually came into the light. Eventually, Jason found God after participating in the prayer service for his classmate Andy. This allowed for him to rekindle old relationships such as his friendship with Chris and start to make positive decisions that would allow him to grow.

Q: What positive message does this book convey to readers?

A: A positive message that this book conveys to readers is that people can change. Everyone makes mistakes and nobody is perfect all the time. Just like Chris and Jason, your sins can be forgiven and you can grow and learn from them. With the help of God and exercising faith, anyone is able to get their life back on track. This book is a perfect example to show how powerful God is, and how finding your faith can change your life.

When Darkness Tries to Hide, by Stacy Padula, follows the same group of friends from Montgomery Lake High, The Right Person. The group of friend has begun to split up, with some of them realizing partying and getting into drugs is not the best idea. Some of them have turned to God, and are letting Him guide them to recovery. The friends constantly need to hope for the best in all of their situations. Their hope is always found in God. They all work to accept God’s abilities in healing, both from addictions and injuries. The teens are faced with struggles throughout “When Darkness Tries to Hide” and constantly look to God for His guidance.

The story is very relatable to teens dealing with drug and alcohol problems, as well as problems with trying to fit in. Many of the freshman from Montgomery Lake High strive to be popular, and will do anything, even if it is against their morals, to fit in. When the teens realize what they have been doing, they all turn to God in hopes that He can help them get back in their ways.

Some of her hobbies include cheering for her high school’s team, hanging out with friends, and spending time with her dog Rosie. Samantha’s favorite subject in school is history, and she is excited to start her senior year.
Samantha was asked a series of questions about young adult novel “The Forces Within” by Stacy Padula, which is the 5th book in the Montgomery Lake High Series.

Q) There is a hidden message (or many) woven throughout this book – what do you think one is and why?

A) I believe that one of the hidden messages in the book is Chantal and Andy being split up. They both had different experiences while being apart (Andy’s “dream” with Leslie and Chantal being stuck in the dumbwaiter being visited by the angel.) Although Andy was in a coma during this surreal dream, it translated into their real lives when he woke up and you can feel the distance between them. Something has changed between the two of them and even you don’t find out what happens yet, you can almost assume it is not good.

Q) How is the topic of spiritual warfare covered in this story?

A) It seems as though many characters in this particular book are struggling with their spiritual views. They either want to be more religious or feel like their friends are just taking things way too far. Characters such as Katherine are trying to find themselves amongst the drama of her friend group. Whether that means leaving her best friends or leaving her boyfriend, she wants to become closer to a more spiritual group of girls such as Chantal. Chantal is struggling with the fact that Andy is not in tune with his religion enough. She believes that since his coma, he needs to be more connected with God, almost as a thank you for letting him live.

Q) What parallels do you see between everything that happened at Fallen Lake and Andy’s life in Montgomery?

A) I found it really interesting due to the fact that almost everything that happened in Fallen Lake correlated to something happening in Montgomery. I thought it was strange that Kat and Bobby were on the verge of a breakup and she was hanging around with Jon more. It was also strange to see Chantal find the hidden chapel but also deal with internal struggles in real life.

Sophia Tufunkjian is a senior at Duxbury High School. Some of her hobbies include volunteering, being involved in her church, and writing. She plans to study business or communications in college.

In the book “The Battle For Innocence” by Stacy Padula, it focuses on the teens you have come to know but now, they are in 7th grade. It gives a small inside look at how they got to be where they are now. You get to experience some of the most confusing times in your life over again but with more drama. There is also a serious aspect to the book, which makes it relatable and helpful to any incoming freshman or high schooler.

Although 7th grade may sound easy for most, for MLMS students, it is far from it. The book touches on high school relationships, drinking and hardship. Which I personally believe should be spoken about in middle school onward to give a glimpse into the real world. Overall I highly recommend this book to incoming freshman or any high schooler. It’s a great read while giving you lessons most schools don’t teach about.

Samantha was asked a series of questions about young adult novel “The Battle for Innocence” by Stacy Padula, which is the 4th book in the Montgomery Lake High Series. Below are her responses.

Why is this book a helpful resource for teens?

This book is a helpful resource for teens because it sheds light on different sides of the teenage lifestyle. You can be more religious and low key or you can be a “party goer” and really enjoy that scene. Either way, it is very important to be your own person and not make choices based on other people. Know yourself and your limits no matter what setting. Throughout the book, you can see some people changing for others and it gives you the most uneasy feeling. The best way to make friends or relationships is to be yourself and show your true colors.

Who is your favorite character in this story and why?

My favorite character in this story is Jon. You get to see him in such an innocent light and I really like that side of him. You can tell how much he cared for Chantal even though she was going back and forth between him and Andy. I really liked how Jon approached the situations he was faced with and it could help some teens out there who are struggling with the same obstacles.

What was the most surprising thing about seeing the main characters’ lives in 7th grade?

I was surprised at how much relationships and dating meant to the majority of them. Of course not for Cathy, but they all seemed to like someone or already be dating. In 7th grade, a lot of the “relationships” are glorified friendships but they seemed to take it pretty seriously. Another thing that caught me off guard was the amount of drinking. In my opinion that is way too early to even look at a drink so I was taken back by it all and how they abused it in a sense.

Why is it important for readers to know the backstory shared in this novel?

It gives you a sense of who the characters used to be and how much they have changed due to certain obstacles or certain people. They are only freshman in the first couple of books but from 7th grade they really did change a lot.

The Right Person, by Stacy Padula, shows how a group of freshman at Montgomery Lake High face the challenges of high school. They go through dangerous situations and have to resist temptations. They realize what it is like to try to become popular and how you can lose friends easily. All of their situations are very relatable to many high school students.

The main character, Chris, realizes he has become dependent on drugs and alcohol and wants to change his actions, after being influenced by his new girlfriend, Courtney. While Chris is done partying, Courtney tries to fit in with his wild friends and finds herself going back on her morals in order to fit in and become popular.

The struggles in the novel are faced by many other high schoolers, and gives a good example of how to deal with struggles and how a student can change.
