An Interview with Annie Stanton on “Gripped Part 3: The Fallout”

An Interview with Annie Stanton—Medfield, Massachusetts

  1. Gripped Part 3: The Fallout touches upon the use of Adderall, acid, marijuana, alcohol, and Xanax. For that reason, parents may not want their children to read the novel. However, the author feels there is much to be learned. What do you think tweens and teens could learn from reading Gripped Part 3 that would be beneficial for them?

The most important thing that young readers learn from “Gripped Part 3” is the consequences of using drugs such as Adderall, acid, marijuana, alcohol, and Xanax. It is beneficial as teenagers going into the world knowing what can happen when drugs are abused and take the best precautions to avoid themselves or others getting addicted.

  1. Why could adults benefit from reading Gripped Part 3?

Adults can benefit from reading Gripped Part 3 for the sole reason that if they or someone they know is addicted to drugs is that there is always a way out. Some characters in Gripped Part 3 realized their addiction was getting out of hand and changed their lives for the better. All people need to know that there is hope to get better.

  1. What storylines were most intriguing in Gripped Part 3? What kept you wanting to turn the page?

I felt the most intriguing storyline was Chris, Brian, and Courtney. It was fascinating seeing all of them develop throughout the series. The awkward dynamic between Chris and Brian was captivating and at points I wish they handled their situation differently.

  1. As drug use abounds in the series, some characters are trying their best to sober up, while others are getting deeper and deeper into substance abuse. How do you think readers can benefit from reading about Chris’s journey from the beginning of the series until now?

Readers can benefit from reading about Chris’s journey from the beginning of the series to the end because it shows that even when you are at your lowest, there is always a way to turn it all around.

  1. At this point in the series, what character intrigues you the most and why?

I find that being at book 3 in the series, I am still very interested in Chris’s story. I am curious to find out if he stays sober throughout the rest of the series or if he relapses. I’m curious to know whether he reunites with Jason or if their relationship is broken forever.

  1. What does this book teach readers about why people begin using drugs?

This book teaches readers about how drugs and alcohol don’t cover up anxiety, depression, or any other mental illness. Drugs are a temporary solution to a forever problem and young readers need to learn coping mechanisms sooner rather than later.

  1. Chris loves Jordan, but Marc hates Jordan. He has slowly been introduced to the reader in the first three books and will play a more significant role later in the series. At this point in the series, what are your honest thoughts on Jordan?

I feel as though Jordan is misunderstood by the characters throughout the series. He did make mistakes throughout the series such as using drugs to start with, but I felt his reputation did improve up to this book but none of the other characters seem to give him a fair chance.
