Izzy Aldridge Reviews “The Battle for Innocence” by Stacy Padula

Article by Izzy Aldridge—Plymouth, Massachusetts

The “Battle For Innocence” by Stacy Padula is a very valuable read for teenagers as it takes a backstory of many of the characters from seventh grade to highschool. The flashbacks presented throughout the book display each character’s paths, and what they experienced along with how they dealt with situations. The utilization of flashbacks really allow the readers to see the growth amongst characters, and how their journeys differ from one another but overall create the person they are presently. Many tests and trials are described through the backstory from seventh grade. Readers can ultimately see how it is very important to stay grounded to their faith and relationship with God. Throughout this story, we can notice how different characters tried new things and how this affects each group of friends. This story illustrates a very good mix of teenagers, whether it is the ones who stay grounded to morals or the ones who party all the time, try new drugs, drink, or just make bad decisions.

The book focuses mainly on Chantal’s story and flashbacks along with her relationship struggles amongst her sister Cathy, Jon and Andy. Cathay mostly fights with her decision to be with Jon or Andy. Along with her confusion on which boy to be with, Chantal’s faith allows her to sort out these issues and to  find the right one for her.

Overall, I would recommend this book to all middle schoolers and early highschoolers who seem to be exposed to these types of regular teenager issues. This book can clearly be represented as guidance for teens who struggle with faith, substance, or friends. Chantal’s way of relying on faith and trusting God can be a very important lesson for teens to endure. This book can be seen as a very important resource for all teens.
